How I long to love these nights
when roses unfurl like a whisper
and the air is swooning with wine

but Cupid is crying into the fountain
and the dark ripples cripple my mind.
All I needed was one kind word

but now I want an enchantress
who’ll petrify me with a velvet curse
(Pygmalion, reversed)

and hide me in an alcove twined
all round with vines; let my face crumple
with rain and years, not dribbling tears.

But maybe they’d still find me here,
run dust-seeking fingers over marble limbs
scanning for defects and hurtful things

to say, to make my sculptor weep;
trample on the trailing creepers
and desecrate my paradise.

1. Traversing the long corridor of days,
arms outstretched, your body spans its width,
smooth wall running constant beneath your palms,

until, in the left wall, an absence opens under your hand,
stops you in your tracks, fillets you like an occasion.

2. Dropping right hand from wall, turn slowly to face this space.
So, running both hands, fingers mobilised and gripping now, along the length of the corners that form this gaping space, and

3. Being brave, step forward into space and find new wall, nose pressed, shallow distance, uncovering itself coyly, somehow different.

4. Pressing small body into
this indent of wall, this liminal space. Big enough, just, for a body.
Too small for the bookshelf of everything in your bedroom at home. Too small for a decade.
Big enough, just, for your gobstopper heart.

A gardened node
Stands in a bushel of bees.
His is a plot they dare not enter,
brimming with light, rich and deep
but detached from the noisy hum.
He is my point of reprieve, a dazzling coin
in a dizzying well. He sits on
a window ledge from which my
Two-pronged thoughts long to dangle. Instead
They dart in each direction before they know
They dare not cross the street
For fear of being squished.
