'There is a story about a Song dynasty emperor, who had a dream of standing in a forest clearing, looking up at the sky after the rain. When he woke up, he demanded that his court potters create a glaze the colour of that sky. The result was a type of ceramic called Ru ware – it is coloured a luminously pale grey-blue, and has a very fine craquelure, like fish scales or early morning frost.'
